Scripture:

Jeremiah 10:12 “Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.  The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.”

Observation:

Jeremiah lived during a time very different from ours.  The distractions they faced during their time were very real like ours are.  Workmen became skilled to create carvings and art and they would hang jewels on them and they became their Gods.  They admired these creations that had no breath and were lifeless and put them above God.  They were false images that they worshipped and offered prayers to them to help others.

Application:

Life today is obviously very different than Jeremiah’s life.  I know I have to be very careful to not allow idols to consume my time.  The Bible is very clear on putting God first and to have a daily relationship with him where we take time to read His Word and talk to Him.

I have to set aside specific times to read and talk with Him or it just doesn’t happen.  I have so many distractions around me every day all the time that I have to have willpower over.  To name a few are my spouse and family, iPhone, computer, music, hobbies, and friends.

God, help me to strive every day to keep You first in my life and not allow things of this world to be my idols.  Help me stay strong in You, so that I can be your disciple.
