1. What You Planned For Evil

1.    “What You Planned For Evil...”

Genesis 50:20 (The Message) Don’t you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for my good, as you see all around you right now—life for many people.

The words of a young man spoken to his brothers some 15 years after they came up with a plan to kill him because they were jealous of their father’s love for him and God’s hand on his life. He overcame their attack and went on to become the second most powerful man on the planet. These words came from his mouth during their reunion. Instead of him being angry, broken, bitter, or vindictive, he recognized the thing planned for his destruction created the perfect environment for his success and God’s fame to spread!

Weapons created for specific enemies/situations:
•    caltrop –– early 300 BC, jagged iron spurs designed to serve to slow down the advance of horses, war elephants, and human troops, particularly effective against the soft feet of camels.
•    battering ram – 300AD – supported by rollers, able achieve a greater speed before striking its target, used against city gates. Such a ram was a favorite of Alexander the Great as he conquered cities.
•    trebuchet – 1400’s - Charles VII of France commissioned a trebuchet that throw a 1800 lb stone 1000 ft. In 1422 Prince Korybut, in the siege of Karlštejn Castle, shot manure and corpses over the enemy walls in order to spread infection among the defenders.
•    Indian katar – 17th century push dagger originated in Tamil Nadu India, Katar a weapon of push knife’s type. At first glance has a single blade. however when a trigger on the handle was activated, the blade would split into three.
•    roman cross – most painful death, usually taking several days, leading to dehydration and suffocation, but even more effective in terracing the masses.

If attacked by any of these, we quickly recognize the enemy and his weapon.

We struggle to recognize circumstances and life situations that are weapons:
•    rejection of a parent
•    sickness
•    divorce
•    financial disaster
•    sins against you
•    your own personal sin

Three Attack Outcomes:
1.    fragile: broken & ineffective
2.    durable: surviving, but impacted
3.    anti-fragile: stronger, more effective

AntiFragile Living...
Isaiah 54:17 (ESV) No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.”

1.    weapons have been and will be formed against you
•    world we live in is infected
•    impacts environment, people, situations, bodies
•    Matthew 5:45 (the) sun rise on the evil and on the good, (it) rain on the just and on the unjust.
•    John 16:33 In the world you will have tribulation.
•    what weapon was formed against you?

2.    settle the servant question
•    Adam & Eve served God in the garden
•    Satan came to tempt... pointed out the good, or value, of disobeying God
•    Satan became ruler, our ruler by default
•    John 12:31 (ESV) the ruler of this world...
•    2 Corinthians 4:4 ...the god of this world
•    John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
•    who’m you serve will have a radical impact on the outcome of attack
•    fragile, durable  – based on your own limited strength
•    antifragile - heritage: nachalah - possession, property, inheritance

3.    he vindicates, you refute & succeed
•    vindicates – the rightful winner
•    refute – argument right against wrong – you are contenting with the weapon
•    succeed - tsalach – rush forth or break forth

Matthew 28:5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

7 Use Your Words

Series Scripture: Luke 3:4-6 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘PREPARE THE WAY of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

There is a trial going on today.
The presiding judge – God Himself
The prosecuting attourney - Satan
The jury, the people of YOUR world.
The charge, “is Jesus really worth following”
In the witness box, YOU!

witness - one who shares what they have seen or experienced
•    you are not on trial
•    you will not be deterimining the verdict
•    you are not called to prove anything
•    you are not to explain what you saw or experienced is real
•    not share the science behind the argument

This is a very real trial taking place today, and God has chosen to use the words of witnesses to prove His case. He has chosen to us YOUR WORDS!

Proverbs 18:21  Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

YOUR WORDS HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE SOMEONE’S ETERNITY

Statistics: only 2% of Christians function as a witness. My Concern: we are living in a day when many have abandoned words and persued a silent witness approach:
•    Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

God’s Work, Our WORDS!
•    The Plagues of Egypt - Exodus 8:1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2 But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with frogs. 3 The Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. 4 The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.” ’ ” 5  And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt!’ ” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.
•    The Dry Bones - Ezekiel 37:3 And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone.
•    Mountains That Need To Move - Matthew 17:20  For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
•    Salvation - Romans 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
•    Faith - Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Effective WORDs:

1.    testify
•    share what God has done, is doing doing
•    give God thanks...
•    more than just a passing reference, give detail

2.    prophesy
•    tell them what God says
•    from quoting scripture, encouraging Biblical principles, word of wisdom, knowledge, etc
•    recognize problems, share Bible solutions

3.    invite
•    will you come to my home
•    can I pray for you
•    would you come to church with me
•    do you want to say yes to Jesus

Exodus 4:10 But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” 11 Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”

1.    It’s Biblical

  • Elijah And the Widow - 1 Kings 17:11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’ ” 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
  • Elisha And The Wealthy Woman With No Children - 2 Kings 4:8 One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food. 9 And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way. 10 Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.” 11 One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there.
    •    Jesus And Prominent Women - Luke 8:1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

2.    It Speeds Kingdom Expansions

  • Matthew 9:37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
  • Mark 4:26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

3.    It’s An Eternal Investment

  • Matthew 6:19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

4.    It Will Bring You Blessing In Return

  • Wealthy Woman & Elisha - 2 Kings 4:12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” 14 And he said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.” 15 He said, “Call her.” And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway. 16 And he said, “At this season, about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my lord, O man of God; do not lie to your servant.” 17 But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her.
  • Mark 10:29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

3. You Are John

Primary Characters in Luke 3
•    God
•    man
•    road that connectes them
•    debris
•    someone who clears the way - John the Baptist? YOU!

John 1:6-8 There was a man sent from God, whose name was (insert your name here). He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

Luke 7:28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than (insert your name here).

Why Don’t You See Yourself In These Verses This Way?
•    you see it as a promise for someome else
•    you see it as someone elses job
•    you see yourself neither as great nor the greatest, and certainly not a prophet.
•    don’t feel like anything big enough has happened to convince someone
•    you don’t feel qualified
•    you’re afraid, of rejection, of failure, of...
•    don’t think they will want it

Most Other Christians Don’t See It Either
•    Only 55% of believers think it’s their duty to share their faith in Christ.
•    Only 2% of believers share their faith in Christ on a regular basis.
•    Only 2% of believers personally win someone else to Christ.
•    Only 50% of believers have ever invited someone to church

It’s an American-churchwide problem. It’s an our-church problem. It’s an us problem.

Great excuses for us and you:
•    some people sow and some people reap. I’m just a sower.
•    God’s given us all different gifts. It must not be His will for me to win others.
•    God’s just called me to focus on discipling others.
•    It’s the NorthWest, people here aren’t interested in Jesus here.

But Scripture Is Prophetically Clear:
•    John 4:35 ...Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.
•    Matthew 4:19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
•    Luke 5:10  And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

What do you do when there is something that should be, but isn’t?  What do we do when earth refuses to yield heaven’s best? “I saw the angel in the marble and I carved until I set him free” Michelangelo

What Now?
•    do you recongnize that you are not winning men?
•    do you recognize that this is the will of God for you and them?
•    do you recognize that we are called can align earth with Heaven?
•    do you recognize that everything in this world wants to fight this?
•    do you recognize that this is a battle we can and will win?

Matthew 13:45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Ezekiel 37:4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.

•    the harvest is white
•    I am a fisher of men
•    I will win my friends, family and coworkers
•    the chair next to me will be filled with one of them
•    my words are the key to eternal life
•    I am called, I am anointed, I am John!
•    I am the greatest prophet when I prepare the way
•    the valleys will be filled in
•    the mountains and hills will be made low
•    the crooked shall become straight
•    the rough places shall become level
•    all flesh shall see the salvation of God

2. Where Does This Road Go?

Series Scripture: Luke 3:4-6 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘PREPARE THE WAY of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

The Luke 3 Highway

•    identified as “the way of The LORD” and “his paths”
•    connects heaven to earth, man to King and Kingdom
•    a bridge for relationships, resources and reign
•    its original state was established, straight, level and smooth
•    created for all and commonly used - Genesis 3:8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day

What Happened To The Highway?

•    Genesis 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

•    Genesis 3:24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
•    SIN DESTROYED ACCESS

Your Highway...

•    decayed – the result of the curse of this world
•    inaccessible - you were born infected with Adam’s sin - Psalm 51:5  Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
•    impassable – the result of your sin - Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
•    hidden – you’ve were blinded by god of this world - 2 Corinthians 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
•    damaged – the result of sins committed against you

The Heart Of God: COME

•    Isaiah 55:1 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
•    Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Jesus Is Our Access

I Am The Way - John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
I Am The Door - John 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
I Am The Gate - Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

1. Living In Response

The LORD Has General Blessings For All:

  • Matthew 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

The LORD Has Distinct Blessings For Followers:

  • Exodus 9:4 But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that belongs to the people of Israel shall die.” ’ ”
  • Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
  • Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
  • Luke 18:28 And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.

Have you considered how following Jesus has benefitted your life? No following Jesus - you have no idea what you are missing.

Psalm 116:12 What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?

I cannot begin to repay, so I will live my life in response!

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 THEREFORE, WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST, GOD MAKING HIS APPEAL THROUGH US. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

My Response Will Include:

1. A Living Example Of An Adopted Son/Daughter

  • 2 Corinthians 3:2 You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all.
  • no one needs to see a perfect Christian – that would eclipse Jesus!
  • they need to see a transparent son or daughter learning to be a family member, experiencing the benefits that come from a generous Dad

2. The Audible Expression Of My Experience

  • Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
  • we are not called to win argument, convince people of our viewpoint, and be able to answer every question, but rather TESTIFY as a good WITNESS to what we have seen and experienced.
  • 1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

3. Frequent & Intentional Invitations To Join His Family

  • Jesus frequently said, "come and follow me"
  • Jesus frequently had meals with sinners, tax collectors, etc and offered invitations to join Him
  • Luke 14:23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.

Matthew 4:18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon  (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
